🌿 Day 3: Hualien – Mountain Peaks & Coastal Dreams
A journey through clouds, marble cliffs, and night market nostalgia
☕ 8:00 AM – Breakfast with a View
We sipped coffee at our mountain-facing hotel porch, watching mist dance over the peaks—pure bliss!
⛰️ 9:30 AM – Hehuanshan (合欢山) Adventure
Altitude: 3,158m at the visitor center marker
Highlights:
Driving through winding cliff roads (white-knuckle moments!)
Cheering on cyclists conquering the ascent (superhuman effort!)
“Walking in clouds” as fog swallowed the road—visibility near zero!
🌲 12:00 PM – Bilu Sacred Tree (碧绿神木)
A 3,000-year-old Taiwan incense cedar (50m tall!) stood like a guardian of the Central Cross-Island Highway. En route, we entered actual cloud banks—our first “skywalk” experience!
🏞️ 2:00 PM – Taroko Gorge (太鲁阁峡谷)
Marble wonderland itinerary:
Tianxiang’s Temples (祥德寺 & 天峰塔) – Zen vibes amid cliffs
Yuewang Pavilion (岳王亭) – Memorial to a Song Dynasty hero
Swallow Grotto Trail (燕子口) – Helmets required for falling rocks!
Eternal Spring Shrine (长春祠) – Waterfalls cascading over a shrine
🌊 5:30 PM – Qixingtan Beach (七星潭)
Did you know? Stacking pebbles here is a local wishing ritual!
We watched the Pacific’s turquoise waves roll onto gray pebble shores—mesmerizing!

A day of geological wonders, nostalgic trains, and steamy surprises
🌅 8:00 AM – Qingshui Cliffs (清水断崖)
Where the Pacific crashes into 800m marble walls! Formed by the collision of Eurasian & Philippine plates, these near-vertical cliffs made our jaws drop. Pro tip: The coastal railway tunnels are photogenic—we caught a train disappearing into the rock!
🎭 10:30 AM – National Center for Traditional Arts
“Taiwanese culture theme park” with puppet shows and handicrafts… but honestly, the least exciting stop of our trip. (Skip if short on time!)

Famous for its golden rice fields… except harvest was done. Our “epic” photos: just dirt + a lone tree. 😅
🚂 2:00 PM – Tiansongpi Station (天送埤车站)
A 1921 Japanese-era wooden train station—last of its kind! Recognized it? This was a filming spot for the drama “Next Stop, Happiness”. The covered walkways (designed for Yilan’s rain) were charming.
♨️ 4:00 PM – Qingshui Geothermal Park (清水地热)
Boiled eggs in 95°C alkaline springs! This valley once powered Taiwan’s first geothermal plant (1981). Fun fact: The sulfur scent comes from deep-earth minerals!

🌄 Taroko Gorge

Marvel at Taiwan’s natural crown jewel – a 19km marble canyon carved by the Liwu River over 200 million years! Towering cliffs in pink and gray marble soar 1,000 meters above turquoise waters, with hiking trails clinging to sheer walls. The iconic Zhuilu Old Trail offers heart-pounding views from a 70cm-wide cliffside path, while Baiyang Waterfall Trail leads to a secret water curtain cave. Don’t miss the Tunnel of Nine Turns where the river thunders through narrow marble corridors – nature’s own art gallery!

🙏 Tianxiang Temple
Perched on a riverside terrace, this serene Chan Buddhist temple features golden roofs glowing against marble cliffs. The bell tower’s 108 chimes (representing earthly desires) echo through the gorge each dawn. Inside the Maitreya Buddha Hall, a 3-meter jade Buddha sits surrounded by 10,000 miniature crystal Buddhas – a breathtaking sight when sunlight hits the altar!

💦 Eternal Spring Shrine (Changchun Shrine)
A waterfall cascades through this bright red shrine honoring 212 workers who died building the Central Cross-Island Highway. The “Stairway to Heaven” climb reveals hidden shrines behind the falls, while the lower terrace offers perfect shots of the Qingshui Cliff backdrop. Time your visit for golden hour when the shrine glows like a lantern against the marble walls!

⛩️ Yuewang Pavilion
This crimson pavilion honors Yue Fei, China’s patriotic Song Dynasty general. The three-tiered wooden structure juts dramatically over the Liwu River, offering panoramic views of Heliu Bridge and the gorge’s narrowest section. Legend says drinking from the nearby “Loyal Spring” brings courage – but the real reward is photographing the pavilion framed by vertical marble walls!

🕊️ Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou)
Watch daredevil swallows dart between marble cliffs in this 500m-long section where the river narrows to just 10m! The Swallow Trail (partially tunneled into the cliff) lets you walk beside nests clinging to pockmarked walls. At “Chieftain’s Profile” rock, spot the natural face carving said to be a Taroko tribal ancestor watching over the gorge.

🌊 Qixingtan Beach

Nestled along Hualien’s stunning coastline, Qixingtan Beach enchants visitors with its mesmerizing crescent-shaped bay and smooth pebble shores that create a natural musical symphony as waves roll in. This 20-kilometer stretch of grey-blue stones (legend says they’re tears of celestial beings) offers breathtaking views of the Pacific’s turquoise waters meeting dramatic mountain backdrops. Famous for its surreal “blue tears” bioluminescence at night and spectacular sunrise vistas over the Qingshui Cliffs, the beach is perfect for cycling the coastal trail, flying kites, or simply meditating to the rhythmic waves. Don’t miss the nearby military watchtowers turned art spaces or tasting fresh seafood at the charming fishing village – where the ocean’s bounty meets indigenous culinary traditions!
