After visiting Sapa, Halong Bay, and Ninh Binh, we returned to our starting point and visited Hanoi.
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is a modern destination with a warm feeling. It is also a particularly safe city with friendly locals and rare violent crimes against tourists. Hanoi ranks seventh in the 2024 list of the friendliest cities in Asia and is a good choice for solo travelers.
Solo travelers can experience a variety of activities, from visiting food markets to exploring historical sites. Hanoi also has a wealth of cultural attractions for tourists to explore, such as alleys, ancient houses, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Temple of Literature, and Ngoc Son Temple at Hoan Kiem Lake. It has always been one of the main cities that attract domestic and foreign tourists.

The site roughly overlaps with today’s Hanoi Imperial Citadel. Due to the unrest caused by the French conquest of Hanoi in the late 19th century, the Thang Long Palace and most of the buildings are in different states of preservation. In the 20th century, many of the remaining buildings were demolished one after another, and it was not until the 21st century that the destroyed foundations of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long began to be systematically excavated. The origin of Hoan Kiem Lake is that Ly Taizu dug a sword from the ground here in his early years and later used it to resist the Ming Dynasty. But one day, when he came to the lake to play, he accidentally dropped the sword into the lake. When he was at a loss, a big turtle suddenly took the sword back with its mouth, so it was named “Hoan Kiem Lake,” which in Chinese means “Returned Sword Lake.”
